1776 was suggested to me by an online viewer, so I decided to check it out.  It was a good suggestion because it’s 100 proof, and it happened to be my 100th bourbcast (linked below).

One of the cool things about the revival of this brand ofter being absent for over 50 years, is that Amir Peay researched the brand and even found a hand written letter from his descendant, Colonel James E. Pepper, which contained the actual original recipe.  They started distilling their own alcohol in 2017, but are currently still using MGP’s distillate.

I found the bourbon to be very flavorful neat in a Glencairn, with a silky mouthful and notes of hazelnut and chocolate on the palate.  But this pour really exploded with flavor after I added a drop of water to it.  Salted caramel and honey notes danced around my tastebuds with every swish.  On ice it didn’t excite me, so I’m saying a drop of water it the ticket.

For the rye, just neat was my favorite expression, with elegant floral notes, a nice spice and again, salted caramel.  Water and ice didn’t do much for it, but it didn’t lose any character in the Old Fashioned I made to honor Colonel Pepper, who’s famed for introducing the Old Fashioned to the world.

I can easily recommend that you give these a try.  I do like the rye a little better than the bourbon, but both are worthy of your shelf.
